In the first of a series on "Communicating with your team" tips, I thought I would kick off with the “Hot Topic” of Motivating others in times of change:

When we seek to Motivate our colleagues or team, we frequently adopt a strategy that would Motivate Us, and rarely consider what would Motivate THEM.

When getting your Motivating message across to your colleagues, consider these Four different Motivating values or triggers:

  • For those who like to get stuck in: Motivate them with messages with Actions, Deadlines and Goals
  • For those who like to engage with People: Motivate them by telling them who else is involved and when you meet
  • For those who value patience and relationships: Motivate them by highlighting the benefit to the People /Clients etc
  • For those who like the detail: Motivate them by focusing in on the Process, System and getting it right !

How will you know when to use which approach???…..Listen to them!
